Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is next on our list of must-see Utah spots
Utah, the top pick on Fodor’s Go List 2016, is well-known for its many canyons offering excursions such as skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, boating, camping and much more. One of my favorite travel locations in Utah is the Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort located in Little Cottonwood Canyon.
For as long as I can remember, my family has traveled to Snowbird every summer to enjoy the many activities it has to offer and to take in the beautiful scenery.
I love visiting Snowbird because I feel it offers some of the most beautiful scenery Utah has to offer, and it has such a wide variety of activities. How many travel locations can you think of where you need to remember to bring your swimsuit, hiking shoes, tennis racket and mountain bike?
The Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort has four lodges for guests to stay at: the Iron Blosam, the Inn, the Lodge at Snowbird and the Cliff Lodge. The guest lodges are surrounded by entertainment and shopping venues including gift shops, restaurants, arcades and spas. The resort also offers recreation venues including tennis and basketball courts, ping-pong tables and fishing ponds.
When you aren’t spending your time hiking or mountain biking your way through the beautiful mountain scenery, you can spend time relaxing with your family and friends at one of the multiple swimming pools, game rooms, spas or live concerts. Each lodge offers its own unique entertainment services to patrons.
One of the most popular activities offered at Snowbird, and my personal favorite, is riding the Tram from the resort area up to the top of Hidden Peak – a climb of 3,000 feet. A viewing platform at the summit provides a breathtaking view of Little Cottonwood Canyon. The summit of Hidden Peak offers a variety of hiking and biking trails back down to the resort. I will usually bring my mountain bike up the Tram with me and make the descent back to the resort down one of the many scenic biking trails.
One summer, several of my cousins and I decided to make the hike from the resort area up to the top of Hidden Peak. Then we would be able to ride the Tram back down the mountain and back in time for a family dinner. Without doing any research on the hike, we assumed we could finish the hike within about an hour. Thinking it was a simple hike, we brought no water and some of us weren’t wearing good shoes for hiking. By the time we realized this was an advanced, multi-hour hike, it was too late for us to turn back. It took us about 4 hours, but somehow we made it to the top of the mountain with no water, no food and without proper hiking gear. The Tram operator at the top of the mountain couldn’t believe what we had just done! Needless to say, we never made that mistake again.
While only a short drive up the canyon, Snowbird offers a feeling of absolute seclusion from the bustling outside world without breaking the bank. The cozy lodges and many guest services give you the comforts of home. A stay at the Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort is a great experience.
